THE
ILLUMINATED MORTE DARTHUR is a work in progress. It will be the first work to
illuminate The Winchester Manuscript of Sir Thomas Malorys Le Morte Darthur.
Executed in egg tempera and illuminated with 22 karat gold leaf, silver and copper
leaf evocative of the Middle Ages and yet emphatically contemporary, the original
fine art will grace a story which has continued to captivate and inspire audiences
for more than four and a half centuries.
Since 1485 the only known version of Malorys Le Morte Darthur was that printed
by Englands first printer, William Caxton. Then, almost half a millennium
later, in 1934, a second manuscript of Le Morte Darthur was discovered in the
Library of Winchester College. Known as The Winchester Manuscript and now housed
at The British Library, this version of Malorys Le Morte Darthur has become
the preferred source, viewed by many scholars to be the text closest to Malorys
original manuscript. |
